All That Jazz

"The horns a blowing, thoughts a stirring, and the words a spoken."

The only spot in Atlantic City playing live Jazz and overing spoken word. This night is  soon to be the most sought after places to visit.

I wonder if the term " I don't mean to toot my own horn but..." applies to musicians. I ask because Thursday January 21st Hassan Abdullah and his band did a tribute to Sonny Rollins and brought down the house. Tooting the hell out of those horns and keeping the audience locked in all night, needless to say The Jazz Corner proved a success. Doors opened at 9pm and the room was empty Mrs. Shelton of the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation became a little but by 9:30 guest started to pour in. The event was attended by guest from 21 and up and by 10:15 management had to start pulling couches from other rooms to accommodate the flood of guest.

The sounds of live Jazz flooded the whole 5Th floor of the Chelsea Hotel in a way that pre-recorded tracks could never do. Tony days drums solo's had your feet taping so much that some of us were inspired to grab some drum sticks and see what we could pull off. The musicians are super talented but not supermen thus needing an intermission here and there, but the show didn't stop when their instruments down. Soon as the artist went on there temporary hiatus to muster up energy for their next set more jazz was played over the PA but this low to play as a soundtrack to the spoken word atist.

Yes, The Jazz Corner also offers spoken word, in between sets local poets have opportunity to step up to the Mic and express their talent. This came as surprising treat for the attendees, just as they would make a B line to the lavatory they were pulled back in by the sharp tongue of the wordsmiths. This past Thursday we were visited by three different spoken word artist one was Samuel Chisolm, an area local who is a full time dancer and dance instructor. Sam recited an original poem named Pandora's box, a deep poem that spoke about the direction of humanity in Sam's eyes. Our second artist was Mrs. Turiua S.A. Raheem Author of GROWING UP IN THE OTHER ATLANTIC CITY Mrs. Raheem read an excerpt from her newly released book GROWING UP IN THE OTHER ATLANTIC CITY and also a few original poems. Last but certainly not least was Michelle Mosley another local artist is nowhere near new to game of spoken word. Mosley is currently the #1 artist in the Atlantic City area on Reverbnation.com for poetry, after hearing Ms. Mosley express herself through three of her original poems we can see why.
